the job search world has changed!

On 9/11/2001, everything changed – our idea of a secure homeland was shattered, but as Americans, we changed to meet the challenge.

The financial crisis of 2008 was the September 11th for the job market – everything changed. The only thing that didn’t change was the weak advice that job seekers are receiving.

Job seekers are still being told to use the same old tactics in a brand new world where 300+ people are applying for the same advertised position.

As our country’s economic crisis worsened during the Fall of 2008 and as I continued to get resumes and cover letters from candidates, I finally had enough!

I got fed-up with receiving material from candidates who didn’t have the foggiest idea of how to attract the attention of an employer.

Then over Thanksgiving 2008, I watched a few TV news programs that offered the same old lame job search suggestions.

My frustration boiled over…

So, I wrote my own book, Secrets To Getting Hired.

I titled the book with the word, SECRETS, because I have never found or heard any job search advice:

  • That truly addressed the things that employers really want to know from a resume and cover letter,
  • That stated how employers actually decided what candidates to call for interviews, or
  • That identified how an employer selected THE candidate to make a job offer to.

As such, I concluded that these 3 keys to getting a job must be SECRETS because none of the outplacement consultants or headhunters ever mentioned these things in their articles, books, or TV interviews.

My experience over the years tells me that people fail to give good advice for 2 reasons:

  • The bad advice will make them more money by keeping you coming back, or
  • They don’t know any better.

Personally, I think that the job search industry is just stuck in their mental pattern of “last-century” advice and just don’t know any more effective methods for helping job seekers.

Let’s face it – the job search industry was not in existence during the Great Depression of the 1930s. So, the only things they know are techniques that have worked during previous business recessions over the past 50 years. Unfortunately, we are in an economy that is unlike ANY other over the past 75 years.
